🐶 Why Is My Dog Itchy? The Answer Most Owners Never Hear
Your dog is scratching again?
Here's why. And here's how to fix it...
You have changed the shampoo.
You have changed the dog food, again, hoping this brand will finally be the one.
You have added the coconut oil because someone on Facebook told you to.
You have added the salmon oil.
You have added the supplement your friend swears by.
You have added, and added, and added.
Here is what nobody tells you at the pet shop.
Nobody tells you online either. And no stupid rating site will ever tell you.
Itchy skin is very rarely a skin problem.
Skin is the last place the problem shows up, not the first place it starts.
What it is actually showing you is what is happening on the inside. Sometimes that is absolute internal chaos, nutrients out of balance, systems under strain, all playing out on the surface where you can finally see it.
Here is the good news. It is fixable.
But you have to act now, and you have to understand something important. It may have taken months or years to create this problem. It may take weeks or months to fix it, not overnight. The quicker you start, the quicker you fix it.
Until then, your dog is uncomfortable. Every day this goes unaddressed is a day he or she is not getting better.
Think of your dog's skin like the paint on a house. If the paint keeps peeling, you don't just repaint it over and over. You ask what is happening underneath, damp, poor foundations, bad materials. Skin works the same way. It is the visible end result of what is happening inside your dog's body, especially what is happening nutritionally.
We have tracked this pattern since 2004. Across our data, itchy dogs cluster around the same handful of nutritional gaps, again and again.
To understand why, you need to understand two types of vitamin, plus the minerals that behave just like one of them. Fat soluble and water soluble.
Water soluble vitamins are vitamin C and the B vitamins. They don't get stored in your dog's body. Your dog needs a steady daily supply of the B vitamins in particular.
If there is ever too much, the body simply urinates the excess out. Vitamin C is different again, your dog produces this itself, so it is not something that needs topping up in the same way.
Fat soluble vitamins work differently. They are vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K. Alongside them sit the minerals that behave the same way, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, iodine and selenium.
All of these get stored in your dog's tissue, bone and organs. They build up slowly and they get used slowly.
But keep overloading them and that same slow storage becomes the problem. The body struggles to get rid of the excess, and over time, that excess can become toxic.
Not only can that become toxic. It is also the start of a low level discomfort that does not get better on its own. It stays there, quietly, until somebody actually does something about it.
Imagine your dog is already carrying that level of overload, then ask yourself this....
What does today's overload achieve, stacked on top of yesterday's overload, last week's overload, last month's overload, and in many cases, last year's overload too.
They are essential. Your dog's body needs them, every single one, to function properly. You cannot avoid feeding them.
But they are so often overfed, and this is exactly where they turn dangerous.
You are constantly being marketed at...
TikTok shops.
Facebook "experts."
Your mate at the park.
The market stallholder selling treats out of a bucket.
Local pet shops.
High street chains.
All of them pushing the next thing...
and all of them saying the same magic words... "packed with".
Please understand something about these TikTok shops, these pet shops, all of them.
They can't afford to advise you in a way that is actually beneficial to your dog. They have costs, the cost of living, energy bills, rent, staff, their own lifestyle to fund.
That reality dictates that they need you to keep buying more, so they have to keep telling you, packed with, keep buying more.
That is not knocking them. It is simply not the same thing as helping your dog.
Packed with vitamin A. Packed with zinc. Packed with goodness. Nobody stops to ask packed with, on top of what your dog is already carrying. That is the problem.
Unlike vitamin C, these cannot simply be urinated out. They sit stored in the bone, the organs and the tissue, quietly building up.
(This is exactly where you need a nutritionist, someone who can give you the actual numbers. Numbers based on NRC guidance. The NRC is The National Research Council, the body that sets science based nutrient targets for dogs, built on decades of published research rather than marketing claims.)
(You need a base food that provides all 49 nutrients, in the right ranges, as its foundation. Then you need to understand what adding treats on top actually does to those numbers. Does four or five innocent chicken feet push your dog's calcium too high? These are simple questions, but you need to know the answer.)
Fed blindly, which is exactly what most people do without realising it, they stop being helpful and become the enemy. They become the danger to your dog.
Nobody tells you that.
Because they build up in tissue, bone and organs rather than passing through, this is where the majority of illnesses we see actually start.
Whether one of these nutrients is running low, or running too high from overfeeding, skin is often where you see it first.
We get between 120 and 135 plus enquiries a day from people dealing with exactly this. Around half of them mention skin or coat problems, alongside other red flags, in what they describe.
We are confident about what fixes it simply because there are too many dogs getting sorted, over and over, to put down to coincidence. Most itchy dogs are not allergic to the world around them. They are underfed in the nutrients that protect their skin from it, or more commonly, overloaded on others, or both at once.
It is rarely one dramatic missing nutrient. It is usually several nutrients sitting slightly low, or slightly high, at once, compounding on each other.
That is a different problem to solve than "my dog has allergies."
Once you actually have the numbers, and once you find a food that can genuinely provide them properly, that whole minefield you thought you were walking through disappears. Clarity arrives.

Treats matter here too, more than most owners realise. So before you change another shampoo, ask a different question. Not "what is on my dog's skin" but "what is going into my dog."
