🐕 Dog Food Knowledge: No. 6, The Allergy Epidemic

Allergies are rising fast. What once seemed rare is now almost expected. But here is the uncomfortable truth. Many of the symptoms we blame on allergies are actually signs of poor nutrition and immune overload. The question is simple. Was it ever a true allergy, or was it another case of bad food with no structure?

🚨 Why Allergies Are So Common

A dog with a healthy immune system can easily manage the odd exposure to pollen, dust, or food-based allergens. The body recognises the problem, sends the right cells to sort it, and moves on. But when the immune system is under daily pressure from low-quality food, the game changes.

We see tired immune systems. Overworked defences. Constant stress from toxins and additives. And then, one day, a new protein or grain triggers a reaction. But was it the protein? Or was it the 200 poor meals before it?

This is where we must be honest. Because if the structure had been in place all along, most of these dogs would never show a single allergy symptom. And because so much of this is caused by poor nutrition, we must ask the bigger question, was it ever an allergy at all? Or just another warning that structure was never there to begin with?

Calling it an allergy makes us all feel better. But calling it lack of structure? That is harder to swallow, because it means it was down to us.

🧠 The Immune System’s Breaking Point

Think about it. The body can only fight so many battles. When allergy triggers pile up every day, the immune system does not get stronger. It gets exhausted. And once it is tired, it cannot protect the dog from bigger threats. Illness hits harder. Recovery slows. And everything becomes more difficult to fix.

Now add a poor-quality food with low vitamins, excess carbohydrates, and constant overload. That is how minor issues become serious illness.

🌾 The Truth About Wheat

Wheat and gluten are not natural foods for dogs. And yet they are found in huge amounts in poor kibble. Wheat allergies are real and often severe. The symptoms include:

  • Itching and watery eyes
  • Dry skin and dandruff
  • Muscle cramps and joint discomfort
  • Loose stools and vomiting
  • Ear infections and nasal congestion
  • Fatigue and weight loss
  • Behaviour changes and skin swelling
  • Hives, rashes, and repeated scratching

But this is where it gets interesting. Wheat is one of the most common causes of itching, yet it is still added to dog food in huge amounts. Why? Because it is cheap. And because many manufacturers ignore biology.

🤧 Itching and Allergies: A Body Warning

Itchy skin without fleas or mites is a clear sign. Something inside is not right. The body is trying to flush out toxins through the skin. This is the dog’s way of coping when the immune system is overwhelmed. Scratching is not random. It is an internal cry for help.

Topical creams and shampoos might reduce the itch short term. But the toxin stays inside. And if you block the skin’s exit route, those toxins find their way back into the bloodstream and organs. That is why some dogs get worse after “treatment.”

In many cases, diet is the cause. And that means diet must be the first fix. Good nutrition removes the need to itch. Poor nutrition hides the real cause and creates future problems.

🔬 Was It Ever an Allergy?

This is the real question. If the dog had been fed properly, with structure, balance, and quality from the start, would the allergy symptoms ever have appeared? Or are we mislabelling the body’s reaction to poor feeding as a medical condition?

Because when we remove the junk and rebuild the diet correctly, most dogs do not need medication. They just need nutrients. So what looked like an allergy turns out to be something else. The result of months or years of low-quality food, confusion, and overload.

It is not just about removing an ingredient. It is about fixing the entire system.

😰 The Stress Factor

Stress also damages the immune system. A sudden scare is not a problem. But constant stress releases cortisol and adrenaline, which shut down digestion, immunity, and even reproduction. This creates more inflammation, more itching, and more confusion.

Stress can come from noise, poor training, loneliness, change, or chemicals in the environment. But no matter the cause, it makes nutrition even more important. A stressed body must not be starved of nutrients. It needs extra support, not less.

✅ What to Do

  • Strip the diet back to structure and balance
  • Choose real meat and visible ingredients
  • Stop overfeeding and remove constant switching
  • Eliminate low-grade additives and colourings
  • Watch how your dog reacts over time
  • Let nutrition lead the recovery

Because over 99 percent of dogs are born with a perfectly functional immune system. The future looks bright. But then we lose our way. We listen to marketing. We feed filler. We confuse the body. And what started as a perfect dog becomes another case in the vet’s waiting room.

The fix is not instant. But it is powerful. Feed biologically. Support the body. Let the immune system work.

Nutrition is not the ingredients. Nutrition is the 22 amino acids, 13 vitamins and 14 minerals in the correct amount, absorbed from food and used by the body.
